Commit Message Writer

Freev1.0.0

Writes clear commit messages from your staged changes, in your repository's own style.

Freewith a free account

Your agent reads the staged changes, works out what changed and why, and writes a commit message you'd be glad to find in git log a year from now.

Works with
  • Claude Code
  • Codex
  • OpenCode
  • Cursor
Updated
Claude Code running /sv-commit-message-writer: it reads the staged changes and recent commit subjects, matches the repository's plain imperative style, and notices the staged files hold two separate changes.

What it does

  • Writes a short subject line in the imperative mood ("Add", not "Added"), under 72 characters.
  • Adds a body only when the change needs explaining: the reason behind it, not a list of files.
  • Matches your repository's style. If the history uses Conventional Commits (feat:, fix:), issue references or a commit template, the message follows them; if not, it leaves them out.
  • Notices when the staged changes do several unrelated things and suggests separate commits.
  • Shows you the message and waits for your approval before committing.

How to use it

Stage your changes and ask your agent to commit them, or to suggest a commit message. The skill takes over from there.

It never stages files on its own, never amends or pushes, and never adds trailers like Co-authored-by unless you ask.
